...The Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, voted to adopt a formal Declaration of Independence on July 2, 1776. At the time, John Adams wrote to his wife, saying he believed that future generations would celebrate July 2nd as a holiday. However, the written document needed editing before it could be officially approved. It was on July 4th, 1776, that the edited copy was ready for signatures. It was on this date that printers completed copies of the announcement that were then distributed across the land. The July 2nd actual vote date for independence was soon forgotten.
